Electric scooter, skateboard, and bicycle riders will have more places on campus to park their rides.
Facilities Services installed 18 new racks in several spots around UC Riverside’s Highlander Union Building, or HUB, in late June. The new racks fit both scooters and skateboards, said Manny Sanchez, facilities supervisor for the HUB.
The racks were installed in conjunction with a new HUB policy that went into effect Monday, July 1, no longer allowing wheeled devices inside the building.
The policy was put into place due to damage caused by riding inside the building. Vinyl floors and carpets were getting burn marks while walls, where riders leaned their devices, were getting scratched up, said Geo Perez, assistant director of the HUB.
“The HUB will be a dismount zone,” he said. “We wanted to create that fully and give people options to store their wheeled devices.”
The new rules are posted on signs around the HUB and its entrances.
The HUB is providing free padlocks to the first 100 students while supplies last. More details on the padlock giveaway will be shared on the HUB’s social media channels soon.
The racks are located in different locations around the HUB – in the lower patio, next to Costo Hall, by the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, and by the solar-powered cafe tables.
Sanchez said the new racks are also meant to deter thefts. Earlier this year, campus police reported a rise in personal electric vehicle thefts.
