Dear Campus Community,

This week, Governor Newsom and the Legislature finalized the state budget that funds the University of California for the 2022-2023 academic year. I am grateful to both Governor Newsom and our legislators who have endorsed our mission through increased investment in the University and our students.

A few of the notable line items in the budget include:

•    A 5% increase in funding for the University of California system, which secures salary increases for employees

•    Support funds for foster youth services, undocumented student services, and carceral system-impacted students

•    Funding for deferred maintenance projects

•    One-time funding for UC Riverside of $47 million for climate initiatives

•    Also, for UCR, $51 million for campus expansion, with intent to provide equal amounts in 2023-2024 and 2024-2025

Over the course of the last six months, many of you have been involved in advocacy efforts. The new funding for climate initiatives and campus expansion are a direct reflection of your work to highlight our university’s needs as well as our impact in the region and state. Thank you for all your efforts.

The budget for the coming year provides a solid down payment on UCR’s future as we grow and expand support for students. We look forward to sharing additional budget details as they become available.
