Provost Elizabeth Watkins, CHASS Dean Daryle Williams, and I have just returned from a six-day goodwill delegation to South Korea to learn of the fatal tragedy in central Seoul.
We are deeply saddened by the news of the many fatalities, and mourn with the families and friends of those who have lost their lives or suffered injuries.
The reports that many of the victims are college-age young adults are unsettling. We extend our condolences to the students, faculty, and staff at our host institutions Ewha Womans University, Yonsei University, Jeju National University, Sogang University, and Sungkyunkwan University.
At this most difficult time, we remain grateful for the warmth, generosity, and hospitality of our South Korean hosts, including the National Institute for International Education and the Mayor of Gangnam.
UC Riverside supports the domestic and international students and scholars adversely impacted by this tragedy. Students who need professional and confidential mental health support may contact UCR’s Counseling and Psychological Services at 951-827-5531. Staff and faculty can contact the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program for confidential counseling, referral, or other resources.
