Dear Campus Community,

The list of individual and institutional accomplishments during the past 12 months has been great. Whenever I pause and look back to see how we have made progress, I am grateful to work alongside you.

At the same time, the last few years have presented a series of unique and complicated challenges for our university. As we close out 2022, our community has experienced another difficult season. For the third time in as many years, we had to adjust to new conditions while continuing the work of creating and disseminating knowledge.

If I can distill all the learnings from recent years into just one, it is this: UC Riverside is a community of resilient individuals who are capable of great results during tough times. We have encountered obstacles but found a way to overcome them, often with help from others.

The events of the past few days offer hope that we will begin the new year on a different footing. We can unite as a community again with renewed focus on the work that emanates progress and positive impact from our region throughout the world.

As we transition from one year to another, please know I am grateful for everything you have done to honor our mission and spread light in the communities we serve. Thank you for your work in 2022 with wishes for peace and joy in 2023.
