Dr. Anita Gupta, a professor of medicine in the UCR School of Medicine, has been awarded the 2025 Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Award. The honor was presented to her during the Annual Convention & Conclave of the American Osteopathic College of Anesthesiologists, held earlier this month in Savannah, Georgia.
The award recognizes practicing healthcare professionals who embody the highest ideals of compassionate and respectful care. Honorees demonstrate clinical excellence, empathy, cultural sensitivity, and an enduring commitment to human dignity in medicine.
Gupta is a globally recognized leader in healthcare transformation and known for her work at the intersection of drug safety, digital health, and health equity. As a World Economic Forum expert and founding curator, she advises on global health challenges including biotechnology and pandemic preparedness. She has led efforts to expand access to naloxone, a medication that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose, and develop early warning systems for synthetic opioids. Previously, she served as New York City’s chief surgeon and a senior advisor at the Milken Institute’s Center for Public Health.
Gupta has played an instrumental role in national and international public health strategy, serving on advisory boards for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Defense, the National Academies of Medicine, and the Gates Foundation’s Innovation Equity Forum on Women’s Health. Her work has been featured in Forbes, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and WebMD. She has also been named a Fierce Healthcare Woman of Influence and a Top 100 Inspiring Leader.
