Dear UCR Staff, Faculty, and Students:
UC Riverside's Annual Geek Week is back and has been moved to spring quarter. “But what does it mean to be a geek/nerd?” – You may be familiar with them as exclusionary schoolyard taunts, or an accepted label of shared identity. Those terms are now often used for folks who identify as being interested in or a fan of anything. You may be thinking of things you see related to ComicCon – comic books, video games, science fiction, tech, art, cinema/television, etc.
“Geeking Out” is becoming more widely used and finding its way into popular culture, and you may agree that our students are growing increasingly interested in geek and nerd culture. UCR Geek Week will strive to be a campus-wide, week-long series of events designed to enrich the student experience through celebration of geek and nerd culture in all its forms as an effort to cultivate a safe and inclusive environment for all students, especially those who might have felt stigmatized by their hobbies and interests.
Geek Week will take place from April 13-17, 2020.
We are looking for departments and organizations to participate by hosting an event during Geek Week. You can host any type of event that will celebrate geek culture. Departments or organizations are responsible for reservations, costs and logistics associated with their event, but the Geek Week committee will assist with marketing and general support for your event. If you are interested in hosting an event, please submit a proposal form by using the following link: https://forms.gle/dhoHiQ9RVNJ7qCNNA
Event proposals are due on February 21, 2020 at 5:00pm
