On July 9, Dr. Anita Gupta, a professor of medicine in the UCR School of Medicine, was honored by California Assemblymember Dr. Darshana Patel with two recognitions celebrating physician leadership and the advancement of women in medicine.

During a ceremony at the Women Physician Leadership Summit in San Diego, Gupta received an official proclamation from Patel designating Feb. 3, 2027, as Women in Medicine Day in San Diego and recognizing the vital role women physicians play in the region's health care landscape.

The date was selected to coincide with the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States in 1849.

The initiative was signed by Patel, who represents the 76th Assembly District in northern San Diego County, and spearheaded by Gupta to recognize the dedication and contributions of local women physicians shaping the future of health care.

The second honor Gupta received was the Distinguished Women in Medicine Award from the California Legislature. The award recognized her “outstanding leadership and clinical excellence, initiative in pioneering breakthrough pain and medical care, and commitment to human dignity deserving of the highest recognition.” The award also recognized the impact of her work benefiting the quality of life of thousands of families.

“Mentorship is the cornerstone of progress in medicine; when we lift others up, we strengthen the entire profession,” Gupta said. “Leadership is not about reaching the top, but about widening the path for those who follow to ensure they have the tools and support to thrive. By championing the communities we serve, we ensure that the future of medicine is as inclusive as it is innovative.”
