Facts Highlanders Should Know About HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

  • HPV has over 200 types. Some cause warts, while others can lead to cancers like cervical, anal, penile, and throat cancer.
  • HPV affects everyone. People of any gender can get it.
  • Most people with HPV don’t know they have it. It usually has no symptoms, but the virus can still be passed on to others.
  • HPV screenings save lives. Regular Pap smears and HPV tests can catch cervical cancer early, before it becomes serious.
  • Condoms help but aren’t foolproof. HPV spreads through skin-to-skin contact, so condoms lower the risk but don’t completely prevent it.
  • Good news—there’s a vaccine! The HPV vaccine prevents over 90% of HPV-related cancers. It’s recommended for ages 9–26, but adults up to 45 might still benefit.
  • Vaccination is your best protection. Stay safe, protect yourself and others.

The HPV vaccine is available through UCR Student Health Services. It’s FREE to students with UC SHIP or GSHIP.
