On 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 15, 2026, millions of people will “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” in The Great ShakeOut, the world's largest earthquake drill.
Major earthquakes may happen anywhere you live, work, or travel. The ShakeOut is our chance to practice how to protect ourselves, and for everyone to become prepared.
Why is a “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill important? To respond quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake before strong shaking knocks you down, or something falls on you.
UCR will be testing all Emergency Communication Channels, including the Emergency Notification System Texts, Campus Voicemails and more. The Office of Emergency Management will also be conducting drills across campus with Safety Partners.
Abhijit Ghosh, a professor of geophysics, will be part of a group of faculty members and graduate students from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences who will have a booth near the bell tower from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will include 3-D models of the area’s faults, maps, and other information about seismic risks.
