The Office of Student Health Services at UC Riverside has a limited number of kits from Quest Diagnostics for COVID-19 testing and is currently using them for designated students who meet Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria.
At this time, the office is not offering a drive-thru option, where a student remains in the car while the test is administered.
“Please call ahead, so we can direct you to what the next steps would be, which may not include testing,” said Dr. Kenneth Han, chief medical officer at the Office of Student Health Services. “Currently, USHIP and GSHIP insurance covers the costs of testing.”
Han said COVID-19 testing takes a few minutes to administer. Medical staff will obtain a sample from a nasopharyngeal swab and/or an oral pharyngeal swab.
“Results from Quest Diagnostics take about two-three days to arrive,” he said. “Treatment is mainly supportive.”
Han advises UCR students to get tested if they meet current CDC criteria.
“If you do not have any symptoms, testing is not indicated for asymptomatic patients,” he said. “If you are having severe shortness of breath call the emergency room ahead of time to let them know you are on your way.”
The Office of Student Health Services uses national CDC guidelines and medical standards of care, which are followed by all UC student health centers and hospitals.
