UC Riverside is monitoring developments from the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles County, Santa Ana wind events across the region, and the related power outages.
Since UC Riverside is not under direct threat, we will continue to maintain normal campus operations. However, we realize many members of the UCR community and their families live within or close to the affected areas and may be displaced or impacted by the fires.
The FAQ below includes information about the wildfires, campus safety, and resources available to assist the Highlander community. This page will be updated as additional information becomes available.
Q: Where can I find information about California wildfires?
A: Stay informed with the following resources:
• Map of current fires in California from CAL Fire
• Follow your local fire department on social media for updates
• Prepare for a wildfire with these CAL FIRE resources
Q: What is UCR doing to monitor conditions around campus?
A: UCR’s Office of Emergency Management is monitoring wind and wildfire events locally. If there are threats to the university community, the Office of Emergency Management will advise the community using the Emergency Notification System (ENS). Learn more about the ENS and sign up.
Q: What if I can’t make it to work/class?
A: During this time, we have asked managers and supervisors, as well as faculty and instructional staff, to provide maximum flexibility for both employees and students who are addressing these challenging situations. Faculty can adjust their class modality if circumstances necessitate.
Along with the Absence from Work policy, employees impacted by the fires or temporary power outage may find the following resources useful:
• PSS and MSP employees: PPSM 2.210 may be utilized on behalf of eligible employees who are impacted by the fire and mass power outage.
• SMG employees seeking leave should refer to PPSM II - 46 (Administrative Leaves with Pay).
• Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA): employees covered by these agreements should review the leave provisions within their respective CBA.
Q: What resources are available to students who have been affected by the fires?
A: The following resources are available:
• Masks and health products at The Well
• Food, hygiene products, and home supplies at R’Pantry
• Emergency housing through Basic Needs
• Showers and nap pods at the Student Recreation Center
• Transportation through RTA and Metrolink
• Microwaves and lounges at the Highlander Union Building
• Emergency funds through Financial Aid
• Mental health support by Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
• Basic Needs Center is collecting donations for students through Jan. 24 and will distribute them on Jan. 29 and 31.
Q: Are there additional mental health and well-being resources available to students during this time?
A: Yes, CAPS is offering additional drop-in sessions during this time. Walk-in and virtual walk-ins are available. You can also speak to a crisis counselor 24/7. Learn how to access these resources at counseling@ucr.edu.
What resources are available to faculty/staff?
UCR has resources for employees who are experiencing emotional/psychological distress. Employees can reach out through the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program.
Q: How can I monitor air quality around campus?
A: Smoke from the fires may contribute to poor air quality in the Riverside area. Learn more from UCR’s Environmental Health & Safety and check air quality on the EPA’s Air Now website.
Q: Where can I learn more about what is happening at UCLA and across the UC System?
A: UCLA is in close proximity to the Palisades Fire but is not currently in an evacuation zone. Classes are being held remotely, and the campus is publishing frequent updates.
More information about what’s happening across the UC System and how you can help is available on this resource page.
