Barry Barish, a distinguished professor of physics and astronomy at UC Riverside, has been selected to receive the IUPAP-TIFR Homi Bhabha Award, which recognizes an active scientist who has made distinguished contributions in the field of cosmic ray physics over an extended academic career.

The award, which includes a certificate, medal, and monetary sum, was established in 2010 by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) to honor Homi Jehangir Bhabha, a cosmic ray physicist known for the Bhabha-Heitler cascade theory and Bhabha scattering.
The IUPAP is a non-governmental international organization that represents all areas of physics. It is organized and run by the physics communities of different countries or regions around the world. TIFR, a research and educational institute in India, conducts basic research in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, and science education.
When Barish receives the award at the International Cosmic Ray Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, in July 2025, he will join a distinguished list of previous award winners. He will also be invited to give lectures at the TIFR and the Cosmic Ray Laboratory in Ooty, India.
Barish received the 2017 Nobel Prize in physics, which he shared with two other scientists, for the groundbreaking discovery of gravitational waves. He was recently elected a member of the American Philosophical Society.
