Demographer David Swanson inducted into Sigma Xi

David Swanson, distinguished professor emeritus of sociology at UC Riverside, has been inducted into the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society.

Sigma Xi comprises some 60,000 members in more than 500 chapters worldwide. Founded in 1886, the organization recognizes research excellence, promotes ethical scientific practices, and supports researchers with networking opportunities, mentorship, and grants. Its members have included more than 230 Nobel laureates.

A leading demographer, Swanson had made major contributions to improving the accuracy of population forecasting and projections.“It’s an honor to be part of an honorary group that is very active in the advancement of scientific research,” he said.

Swanson earned a doctorate in sociology at the University of Hawaii in 1985 and joined the UCR faculty in 2007.

He is the recipient of the Mindel C. Sheps Award, two Fulbright awards, and more than $2.7 million in grants and contracts. He has authored or co-authored 136 journal articles and nine books, and has edited or co-edited five books.
