Never Too Young to Plan for Retirement

Thinking of retiring soon – or in 20 years?

Planning for it should start now, said John-Stephen Henderson, UC Riverside’s director of Total Compensation within UC Riverside’s Human Resources Office.

Henderson’s team has scheduled several workshops for UCR employees regarding retirement planning, financial planning, Medicare coordination, and resources that are available. Workshops are open and available to all employees, regardless of age or how long they've been employeed at UCR.

“UCR offers these workshops every year. This year, we added a Medicare workshop because faculty and staff asked for it,” said Tina Rodriguez, Human Resources benefits lead.

Staff and faculty wanting to retire as of July 1, 2018 may schedule an individual consultation before March 29, Henderson said. This allows faculty and staff sufficient time to complete the required  paperwork to receive their first retirement paycheck on August 1, 2018.

The first in a series of four retirement planning workshops was held on Jan. 22 at the Alumni and Visitor Center. Three more workshops are planned for next month:

  • Feb. 12: 10:30 a.m. to noon at HUB 355. Topic is on Medicare.
  • Feb. 12: noon to 1 p.m. at HUB 355. Topic is on maximizing your Social Security retirement strategy.
  • Feb. 26: noon to 1p.m. at HUB 355. Topic is on fundamentals of retirement and income planning.

Workshops are sponsored by Kaiser Permanente and led by Medicare professionals.

Employees are always welcomed to contact their human resource representative or the Total Compensation office to set up individual meetings to discuss any retirement-related questions, Henderson said.
