UC Riverside will mark the start of a major new project this month with an Oct. 4 groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the North District.
The first phase mixed-use community will provide 1,500 apartment-style beds for students. Future phases will include new dining facilities, mixed-use residential and athletic facilities, and additional residence hall student housing. At full build-out, the project will provide 6,500 student beds.
Grading on a portion of the 50-acre site has already begun. Construction of the first phase will continue in that area north of Linden Street through 2021.
No major road closures are planned this month on Linden, though there will be some occasional construction-related traffic.
This month should also see some progress on the outdoor art sculpture on the walkway between the Arts and CHASS Interdisciplinary buildings. New concrete will be poured this month with trees, signs, and other features to be installed in early November. The sculpture is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.
Work continues on the Dundee Residence Hall and Glasgow dining facility, the Pierce Hall renovation, and the Barn, which is on target to be completed by the end of the year and open early next year. No additional road or sidewalk closures are planned for those projects this month.
