UC Riverside’s ScotSurplus store is back this fall at a new location after a more than two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
ScotSurplus offers an eclectic assortment of used furniture, electronics, office supplies, clothing, books, bikes, lab supplies, and more. The items come from departments across the university.
“ScotSurplus is a benefit to the campus and community by offering good, usable items at low prices that help during high inflation periods,” said Shari Hunke, UCR associate director of auxiliary marketing.
Housed in a warehouse for the past 50 years, ScotSurplus is now in a new spacious location at the Corporation Yard on Watkins Avenue offering customers easier access and more of a retail shopping experience.
Sales are available to university department buyers, five days a week, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Public sales are held bi-monthly, on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., with upcoming dates on Nov. 1 and 15, followed by Dec. 6 and 20. Credit cards and Bear Bucks are accepted.
Students can get a couch and chair to match for as low as $100, dining tables and chairs for $110, dressers for $75 and much more for reasonable prices, including tools and plateware.
“Shopping at ScotSurplus helps students with furnishing their apartments and rental houses with used furniture we recycle from across the campus,” Hunke said.
Items like refrigerators, stoves, and electronics are available on Craigslist, while more expensive items such as university vehicles are sold via auction. Online sales with access to Craigslist and the auction site are available by visiting the UCR Campus Business Services site.
All sales are final, with items being sold as is. Items such as electronics are ensured to work properly. However, the staff will work with customers if a return or exchange needs to be made.
