The Department of Chemistry at UC Riverside, in collaboration with UCR Extension and the California Society of Cosmetic Chemists (CALISCC), has launched the West Coast’s first educational program in cosmetic science. The certificate program offers students the opportunity to gain foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in the field of cosmetic science.

Cosmetic science is the study of formulating, developing, and testing cosmetic products aimed at improving or altering the appearance and health of the skin, hair, nails, and other body areas. Integrating expertise from various scientific fields, including chemistry, biology, materials science, and engineering, it creates safe, effective, and visually appealing products.

“As the cosmetics industry continues to evolve, it has become a dynamic, interdisciplinary field that blends creativity with cutting-edge science,” said Kerry Hanson, director of the 13-unit, 12-month program and a professional research chemist in UCR’s Department of Chemistry. “The modern cosmetics industry integrates cutting-edge technologies and scientific principles across a wide range of sectors, including skincare, haircare, makeup, fragrances, and beyond.”

The UCR Certificate in Cosmetic Science combines the academic rigor of the University of California with industry-leading lab training, offering a blend of online coursework and hands-on laboratory experience.

“We began the collaboration with UCR Extension and CALISCC about three years ago to develop this certificate program,” said Leonard Mueller, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry. “The program is ideal for individuals already working in the industry as well as current graduate or advanced undergraduate students seeking to break into the field. UCR Chemistry is proud to bring this exciting opportunity to our students.”

Endorsed by CALISCC, the program kicked off last year with two online hybrid foundational courses, “Intro to Cosmetic Science” and “Skin and Hair Biology,” and 48 hours of lab work covering emulsion and surfactant technology and product development. Online lectures complemented weekend lab sessions to ensure flexibility for both working professionals and students. Students developed their bench skills using state-of-the-art equipment from top industry suppliers and gained proficiency in lab software.

“The cosmetic science field is rapidly growing and offers diverse career opportunities,” Hanson said. “We are excited to equip the next generation of professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in this dynamic and globally recognized industry.”

The first cohort of students completed the program this month. The students represented a broad cross-section of individuals — from those new to the field to those seeking career advancement. Among the students were aspiring cosmetic scientists, professionals with bench experience, regulatory affairs specialists, and physicians interested in applying cosmetic science to their practice or developing their own product lines.

“Whether you’re just starting your career or looking to further your expertise, the opportunities in the cosmetic science field are diverse and exciting,” Hanson said. “From research and development to quality control, regulatory affairs, marketing, and even international opportunities, this program opens doors to a wide range of career paths.”

The next cohort of students will begin in Winter 2025, with classes starting January 14. The application deadline for the first class is January 14, 2025. A 15% discount for the first class is available through December 9, 2024, with promo code WNTR15. Interested individuals may connect with an enrollment advisor at UCR Extension.
