The lawn outside UC Riverside’s Student Services Building has a new large tree, replacing one that collapsed in a windstorm eight months ago.
Facilities Services planted the 21-foot-tall Italian stone pine at the same spot on Thursday, May 21.
It replaced a 100-foot-tall Italian stone pine that came down due to strong winds and a failing root system during a September storm. Estimated to be about 70 years old, it was one of the oldest and largest trees on campus.
The new tree, grown in a nursery in Escondido, is about 20 years old and weighs about 10,000 pounds, said Mark Jones, campus arborist with Facilities Services. It was trucked to campus potted in a 72-inch diameter box and then transferred to a telehander before being planted in the lawn.
