UC Riverside’s new parking structure has won multiple awards from an international parking and transportation organization.
Big Springs Parking Structure 2, which opened in fall 2021 on the east end of campus, received the Award of Excellence for Sustainable Design from the International Parking & Mobility Institute, a world-wide association of professionals in parking, mobility, and transportation.
The parking structure also won an Award of Merit for Stand-Alone Structured Parking Facility Design and an Award of Merit for Surface Parking Facility Restoration to Parking Lot 13.
The new structure was built on the east side of Parking Lot 13, which was improved with a redesigned walkway, additional accessible parking spaces, and a new passenger waiting and loading space.
Transportation Services and Planning, Design and Construction worked on the project, which increased available parking for students, employees, and campus visitors.
The four-level, 1,079-space parking structure, which is equipped with Wi-Fi internet, has two entrances and includes bicycle storage with a tire inflation station, 104 electric vehicle charging spaces, security cameras, and a solar-ready roof. The new structure and surrounding space provide a total of 1,287 spaces — a net increase of 800 for the campus.
Transportation Services also won two awards for its annual Donations for Citations blood drive. It won the Award of Excellence for Marketing and Communications and the Award of Merit for Innovation in a Mobility, Transportation, or Parking Program.
The International Parking and Mobility Institute will feature the winners in the June issue of its Parking & Mobility magazine and recognize them at its June conference.
