UC Riverside’s first-of-its-kind North District Phase 2 student housing complex received the Mayor’s Innovation Award at the Riverside State of the City on Jan. 28.
The 415,000-square-foot complex, which opened last summer, brought together UCR and Riverside Community College District students in two apartment-style buildings with 1,568 beds. UCR and RCCD partnered on the project to meet critical housing needs for both student populations while offering community college students an opportunity to experience a four-year university campus.
UCR Chancellor S. Jack Hu and RCCD Chancellor Wolde-Ab Isaac accepted a plaque at the event.
The award is part of the Keep Riverside Clean and Beautiful program, which has recognized several past UCR projects as well. The Mayor’s Innovation Award is a special recognition chosen by Riverside Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson from the top-scoring finalists.
“North District 2 is a beautiful contribution to the city landscape,” said Jacqueline Norman, campus architect. “Recognition from the City of Riverside underscores the value of design that is rooted in service and partnership.”
A video introducing the award at the State of the City stated that “the project enhances Canyon Crest Drive and serves as a welcoming gateway connecting the campus with the surrounding Riverside community.”
